Conceal
An interactive façade that is super shy.

Prompt: make a building facade that has a skin and a bone.
Idea
As someone who quit from architecture education, I don’t have much interest in building facades.
However, I love interactive pieces.
What if looking at the facade as a group of guardian creatures?
Facade: Hi there~ Nice weather.
Stranger: Hello!
Facade: Ahhhhhhhhh Danger! Danger!
Design the Structure
I first looked at structures, origamis, and arranging techniques, to see what could act as individual creates but also being able to be formed into a bigger pattern.
I found a structure that has potential to me, so I started to test it’s features.
I finally decided to use this origami structure because it has the feature of transforming and creating interesting patterns in a 3d space.
The next step was to build up the moving system. I made a sketch model to test out the space needed at each connection.
I once researched on smart metal to see if that could provide the force my structure needs. But because of the limitation of material sourcing, I decided to switch to an Arduino system.
I’ve never used Arduino or coding before, so I asked a friend and made detailed notes.
Make It Happen
This is the first time ever in my life making something working on an Arduino board.
I was trying to make an insurance block, so that my servo won’t stop at the point I needed, it has a backup mechanism to turn it off.
One of the critical parts in making all those things work is to have a stable “bone” structure.
I chose to use this kind of system not only because it’s stable, but also because I could easily take it apart if anything went wrong.
I made customer joints just to fasten everything in place.
I used zip ties to put things together. The zip ties create this technical but clean feeling which I found very interesting.
I put the structure together before connecting to the electronics.
Then, finally, testing the programming on my structure!
