stahl house

Stahl house, also known as the Case Study House #22, was designed by Pierre Koenig in Los Angeles, California. It was frequently used as a set location in American films. In 2013, Stahl house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Case study houses

The Case Study Houses program was held between 1945 and 1966, following the Weissenhof Estate exposition, commissioned a study of economic and easy-to-build houses.

The program is more of an experiment taken place in LA to explore with new construction materials and methods in residential architecture.

I was amazed by this program when I was learning about this in my previous architecture education. So I really want to create something to make those names more accessible to the public so that people could learn more about those houses on their own.

Why Puzzle?

Puzzle is something that could be used both as a decoration piece at home and an interactive toy for entertainment. People could engage with it, interact with it, and, after playing, display it on view at home. Thus, I think puzzle is the good media to bring the names of the Case Study Houses into the public world.

Sketch

I started with one of the most iconic ones among the Case Study House: the Stahl House.

I took the very iconic view, blocked it out into color themes, and assigned depth variations to bring in more dynamic for the piece.

Make

The prototype is made of MDF board.

I glued a copy of my sketch on the material to better cut the board.

After cutting out all the pieces, I tested the fit and the playing experience, with some little adjustments made.

Because of the modern scheme of the buildings, I chose those higher saturated and contrasted colors for my puzzle.
