Vortex

A parasite architecture on ArtCenter College of Design.

Spring 2018, 5 weeks

(This was done before I applied to ArtCenter.)

parasite architecture

(prompt)

Design a parasite architecture for 2-4 urban researches on ACCD Hillside campus to create an impact to the host building. By using the same structure system as the host building, but opening up the interior space, I opposed the separated programs of the Hillside campus. Besides, I enabled the researchers to see Pasadena city against the isolated location of the campus.

Learning About Hillside Campus

To really understand the site, I did a campus visit to deeply understand the program and plans of the architecture.

Site Model

Hands on to deeply understand the site and the host architecture. Also prepare for telling the story of my design later.

Design Decisions

where to locate?

  • Next to ACCD library.

  • Close to guest parking lot entry.

  • Close to the Environmental design department.

  • Connect to the main circulation of the host building.

What do researchers need?

  • Place to sleep 2-3 nights.

  • Place to hold a lecture for 10-40 people.

  • Place to work (private).

  • Place to present (semi public).

  • Place to do research (library).

Privacy hierarchy

Private to public:

  1. Sleep

  2. Private work

  3. Library

  4. Lecture (presentation)

Open up the circulation

The circulation in the host architecture is linear and closed. I want to create an open (surrounded) circulation as opposed to the host building. By opening up the circulation, the space will also feel bigger in this small parasite architecture.

Layering idea (parti)

Using floor level to accommodate the privacy need and breaking up the space.

Blocking out the different function areas and their relationships.

  • Storing books under stairs.

  • Stairs as seats.

  • Roof access for further views.

  • Private areas to the inner top.

  • Scale calculated.

  • Extruded roof, for shading. (Eliminated later. Because it’s not looking consistent, also the structure doesn’t require extra shading tested by moving a flashlight.)
